James Stibilj CV

James Stibilj is an Australian set and costume designer / design assistant based in London and Sydney, working across theatre, opera and film. He is a 2025 recipient of the Linbury Prize for emerging stage designers.

James received a BFA in Design for performance at NIDA, where he was mentored under designers Bob Cousins and Stephen Curtis. James has been the recipient of the Robert Helpmann, Tim Fairfax and Leslie Walford scholarship awards. Recent design work includes the costume design for King Lear at Belvoir St. Theatre.

He has assisted at Opera and Theatre companies including the Royal Ballet and Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro dell’Opera Di Roma, Polish National Opera, Toneelhuis Antwerpen, Opera Australia, Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir St. Theatre, Griffin Theatre and Sydney Festival. Designers he has assisted include Mel Page, Michael Levine, Kym Barrett and Tim Chappel.

Alongside stage and screen design, James is an award winning illustrator. Work across both have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW (Sydney) and the National Theatre (London).
